A lot of us remember the original Tamagotchi toy as a handheld virtual pet in which we wasted hours of our time taking care of. That part hasn’t changed from the first version in 1996.

As a late Christmas present to myself I decided to purchase a Tamagotchi 4U from Amazon. The 4U iteration was released in 2014 in Japan, and never came over to the west. What attracted me to this version was the colour screen and the NFC communication feature.

Once I took the the Tamagotchi out of its package I had to insert the batteries. Thankfully you don’t have to use a screwdriver, instead you press the little button at the back.

The box contains a Tamagotchi, instruction manual, batteries and a NFC card

Press the button the left to pop out the battery cover

After the Tamagotchi is turns on for the first time, You will be asked to enter today’s date and your username.  Yes, it is entirely in Japanese so I got Kendra’s help in translated what it was asking me to do.

The egg given to you is entirely random, so you won’t be able to choose the gender or what it looks like.

I am obviously having a lot of fun so far.  I will be providing a a more in-depth look and review once I’ve been able to play with this thing a bit more. I was able to get the White Gold version for about $30 on amazon.ca through a third party seller in Japan.  The prices on amazon fluctuate, but if you are a Tamagotchi fan and haven’t picked up this version I definitely recommend it at that price point!
