Aboard the International Space Station astronauts are running an experiment that brings new meaning to the words “Harvest Moon.”
Astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted out photos of a flower called Firey Zinnia Bloom which is now the first flower grown entirely in space.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found any further information on how this flower may have developed differently from one that was grown on Earth but I did do a quick google search of a regular Firey Zinnia Bloom to compare. It would appear that in space the petals are curling inward from the top as far as what we would normally see due to gravity pushing them back. Other than that, as I’m not someone who studies plants, I can’t really say what else being grown in space will have done to this flower.
It’s extremely cool regardless – although I guess they’ve also grown lettuce up there but
lettuce isn’t sexy
to report on.
