There were some pretty awesome things that happened last week. But we, here at Geek Out, are a lazy bunch and sometimes even when it’s a topic that really interests us we go “meh.”
So for all the “meh” we did last week let’s just do a quick recap of this news, which has now been retreaded and retweeted to the point that this post when you read it you will question why we bothered…we bothered cause…well because we can.
We cover Doctor Who, X-Files, WWE, Steampunk on Netflix, and Labyrinth remake briefly below!
Doctor Who – The HUGE news of last week, for me, was that Steven Moffat is stepping down as longtime Show Runner of Doctor Who. I was not among the people that completely loathed him but I can understand why people were calling for a new direction and for him to step down. The really bad result of him deciding to step down is that it now causes a rift where in there will be NO DOCTOR WHO IN 2016. I hope we at least get a Christmas special but it’s going to be close to 2 years before a new Who. This all makes it a bit more stiff with the announcement that Netflix is pulling Doctor Who from its roster. You won’t even be able to get your fix from a typically faithful access point.
X-Files – The new season of the X-Files kicked off last night. Ma
ny a fan were angered here in Canada because it was preempted by at least 30 minutes for some Sportsing event no one cares about. If you know for a bloody fact that a highly anticipated TV show is premiering and could potentially be preempted due to testosterone – move it! I was watching the Royal Rumble last night so I was sort of saved. I’ll be watching it tonight and giving a review on its start later in the week!
WWE Royal Rumble – Yes, Geeks, wrestling is totally in the sphere of us. They attend a lot of the same Comic and Entertainment Expos side by side with our Sci-fi and Fantasy stars. They also show up in a lot of the same movies and TV shows because it is a very symbiotic relationship. Perfect examples: Batista in Guardians of the Galaxy or Edge in Haven. The Royal Rumble was much better than I had expected. They are really forcing Roman Reigns down our throats and I honestly thought he was going to win the Rumble. To my utter surprise he didn’t. To less of my surprise, Triple H’s ego won. Plus side: SAMMY ZANE!!
Women’s Wrestling – Yah I don’t like it called the “Diva’s Division” it cheapens the quality in my opinion and I could go on a rant to explain why but I won’t. The victor was Charlotte and my poor favorite Lass Kicker, Becky Lynch, not only lost but was shown simply to be a ramp up for the return of The Boss, Sasha Banks to make a return and rub salt in Becky’s wound. I’m very worried that the WWE is going to under utilize Becky and make her a glorified jobber. There are already a majority of the ladies used in the division who have so little in the way of in ring skills that to force Becky into a jobber status would be such a waste of perfectly good talent. Right now I feel like she would have been better served staying in NXT.
Steampunk Netflix –
It’s a little misleading but there’s a Cyberpunk film being developed for Netflix that will be an adaptation of Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. I am only a new reader in the Steampunk novel world so I defiantely haven’t dipped a toe into Cyberpunk and am totally unaware of this writer or his works. That being said, it’s something to note down, read and then watch later on! There is also supposed to be a Sci-fi Steampunk style TV series scheduled as well entitled ARQ.
Labyrinth getting remake – If you are feeling a mixture of glee and utter despair than you have the right kind of emotional balance. It isn’t that this news just comes so smartly after David Bowie passed away but it’s also because Labyrinth doesn’t need a remake. It’s a wonderful little bit of hope that they could cast the right people and somehow recapture a speck of the magic the first one made but we all know that Hollywood has a bad habit of ripping the soul out what made originals good. For every 10 made you may end up with a nice shiny new Jen (tee hee Dark Crystal reference) but we also know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions…
Did we miss something? Let us know!

Did you know that the Victorian English made Catsup with mushrooms and not tomatoes. Just saying.
